The Charity

The Me2 Club Committee was formed in 2001 as a response to consultation. Parents of children with special needs were asked to identify the services they needed to improve the quality of their life and that of their child.

As a result of this research parents expressed the wishes for their children was to play and join in activities alongside other children. They felt that by encouraging and enabling both children with special needs and mainstream children to socialise together and to see each other as part of the same community, the project would challenge disadvantage and barriers to inclusion.

The aim of the charity is to;

  • Recruit, screen, select, train and support volunteers to accompany children with special needs to activities to which they would not otherwise have access.
  • Publicise the existence and purpose of the Me2 Club to parents and children with special needs.
  • Work in partnership with local schools, colleges and local agencies to help people access volunteering opportunities.
  • Work together with local activity providers to provide the most suitable environment in which the children can take part in their activities.

In 2003 the charity was awarded funding from the Community Fund, now the Big Lottery Fund, to run the project.

There is one full time employee, the Project Coordinator, who runs the project on a day to day basis.

The Me2 Club charity committee is made up, predominantly, of parents that have children with special needs but there are also other members that are interested in furthering the work and aims of the charity.
